This past weekend, Douglas Partners Brisbane had the privilege of hosting students from the QUT Natural Resources Society for an educational site visit at the Keperra “The Quarry” subdivision project, currently being undertaken with our client, Frasers Property Australia.
During the visit, the students were guided by Senior Associate and Senior Engineering Geologist Robert Thomson, who shared insights into the rock slopes and the advanced methodologies used to mitigate landslide risks. This firsthand exposure gave students a clearer understanding of the practical applications of geotechnical engineering in real-world projects.
The students also learned about the permanent slope retention system that will be installed, as well as the extensive testing and certification processes involved in ensuring the safety and stability of the slopes. Through these insights, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the critical role geotechnical engineers play in land development and environmental management.
Students had the opportunity to engage directly with professionals in the field and ask questions about the technical challenges and solutions that form part of large-scale projects like the Keperra subdivision. The experience was a great way to bridge classroom knowledge with the realities of geotechnical engineering.
We are grateful to the QUT Natural Resources Society for making this enriching experience possible, and we hope the students walked away with a greater sense of confidence and curiosity as they move forward in their studies and future careers.
